Battle axe
A decorative souvenir replica of an Ottoman battle axe (tabar/teber), styled after products by the Turkish brand Paşabahçe (the Ottoman series / Aziz Teber), made of clear glass with gold-coloured painted details.
Condition before restoration:
— A complete fracture through the clear rod at the joint between the semicircular blade and the vertical shaft.
— The applied gold-coloured element at the intersection was deformed and had peeled away from the clear base.
Main stages of restoration:
— Removal of surface dirt: mild aqueous solutions with a neutral pH were used (without alcohol, alkalis or acids).
— Bonding and stabilisation of cracks and chips: optically clear polymers were used.
— Grinding and polishing: joints were levelled by successive polishing with increasingly fine abrasive pastes until the glass regained its full shine.
Tools and materials:
— Rotary tool, diamond burs and drill bits, and a set of needle files.
— A neutral-pH aqueous solution, specialised UV-curing epoxy resins, and polishing paste for glass restoration.
